Why studying a Diploma of Nursing was the right choice for me
We often hear that Nursing is a calling, nurses have a passion for providing patient care but how do you know that Nursing is your calling?
The following is written by a Diploma of Nursing student, Patrick Amuli.
I’ve always been intrigued by the complexities of the human body. It’s fascinating to learn how our bodies work and cope with both internal and external stressors.
When I was younger I always dreamed of becoming a doctor but I couldn’t afford to go to Medical School so I studied Primary HealthCare instead. A few years later, I was undertaking a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Medical Science and something about it didn’t feel right.
I started thinking about Nursing as a career. I realised that there is a high demand for nurses in Australia and getting into nursing would open many career opportunities as you are able to choose from several specialisations. I personally believe that planning for the future is critical and you must be wise while making such decisions. Joining a Diploma of Nursing was my opportunity to turn my dream into a career.
However, deferring from University was a tough decision. I had a lot of pressure from my friends and mostly from my fiancée who thought that moving away from a Bachelor’s degree to a Diploma wasn’t the right thing to do. I spent a lot of time debating it and eventually I made my decision. On the 13th of June 2018, I gathered all the courage I had and I applied for a Diploma of Nursing at THINK Health Education.
The enrolment process was very simple, it took me less than 20 minutes to complete the online form, my Course and Career Advisor was really supportive and two weeks later, I received a letter of offer. I started my Diploma on the 23rd of August, I still cannot believe how quick it was.
My first day of induction was fabulous. The nurse educators and the campus team were very welcoming which created a nice atmosphere. I honestly didn’t expect them to be so lovely. It clearly had a positive impact because I was looking forward to going back to school the next day. I also met my classmates, I made new friends.
Today I am proud to say that I am truly enjoying my study. The educators are great, they provide us with unconditional support. I’m planning to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing straight after my Diploma. I now know what I am passionate about, I want to become a Nurse Practitioner. It is satisfying to say that I can finally see a positive outcome. I see success at the end of the journey, I can see my dream coming true.
If you have a dream and feels like you want to make a difference in people’s lives then nursing could be your dream career. It doesn’t always sound glorious but I can assure that working as a nurse is fulfilling and will give meaning to your life.
